On February 15, 1999 we sent out an email to 500 people across the United States launching Unlocking Autism with our Open Your Eyes program. Our call was for families to send us pictures of their loved ones with autism so that we could raise awareness.
We read every letter that you sent to us! Jeana Smith, one of our founders, scanned in each of those pictures by hand, cropped them and laid them out in graphics that eventually became vinyl banners that spanned 5 football fields in length by 2004.
We would unfurl these banners, state by state on Capitol Hill for our Power of One! events.
In 2016, we held our last Power of One event to assemble the peaces (yes, spelled that way) of the puzzle because we are better together. We launched a new effort that day in search of new answers which we will be telling everyone about soon on our podcast expected to launch in May 2025 now that we have bloomed where we were planted. We know it has been the lessons from that day to this that have finally unlocked the door.
We can’t wait to tell you the whole story for such a time as this!
So on February 13, 2025 we relaunched our Open Your Eyes 2.0 project for the next generation. OPNURIZ 2.0 captures the wisdom, experience and knowledge gathered along the last 25 years of our journey and throughout our 26th year, we will be sharing what we have learned to set things in order not only in the United States, but Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Stay tuned and watch this space….because we are going to party, and laugh, like it is 1999.
